Day 25- National Park Tour: Glacier National Park

Saturday July 30, 2016

The plan: quick breakfast, shuttle to Logan Pass Visitor Center, hike to Hidden Lake, back at camp in time for lunch, chill time, and car prep for tomorrow's drive home... The Guerra Way- Think Harder, Not Smarter.

Breakfast of pancakes was good, but the side serving of quesadillas hit the spot. We packed a quesadilla each along with mini Pringles containers for snacks on our quick hike. We were at the Apgar Visitor Center and in line for the 45 minute wait in order to board the shuttle by 9:30 or so.

By noon, we were at Logan Pass Visitor Center. Many of us agreed that we'd all be lame and call it quits shortly into the hike so we could make it back to camp to get real food since our snacks were already gone. Also, the hike up from the Visitor Center was very steep!

Of course I lagged behind with Chuck Roast, who suddenly had a stomach ache, which only really happen when he doesn't want to do something. Christopher came running down shortly after the first good rest spot: a large rock to the side of the boardwalk path. He carried Chuck Roast a good ways up the path. Like, Chuck Roast only had to walk ¼ or so of the entire path! What a great cousin! On his front like a baby, he also wore my Cotopaxi pack I got in my monthly Cairn Box right before we left!

The higher we got, the more streams we crossed.

I had known nothing about the hike ahead of time other than there was a lake, so the kids, Christopher, and I were dressed in our swim suits. This meant that we were dying to drag and splash our way through all the snow-fed streams that crossed the path! The water was so crisp and cold that I wanted nothing more than to drink from the streams (I didn't but it was a hard decision to make)!

Almost to the top and we spotted a couple of mountain goats close to the trail. Then some people ahead of us spotted some on a nearby mountain top.

It amazes me how high they can climb! We found what we called the overlook and sat down to enjoy the view of the mountains and Hidden Lake. It was spectacular. Then Christopher popped back from further on the path to notify us that the real overlook was 10 feet away around the bend. Of course we would be the ones to miss the overlook because where we were was 'good enough' for us.

The overlook was incredible and we took a gazillion amazing pictures. On the way back down, which was SO much easier, we splashed in the streams and caught pictures of a couple more mountain goats lazying in the snow by the path and a ptarmagan bird (we think) by a stream.

Once back down, we caught the shuttle and made it back to camp for lunch, after I took a heavy nap on the shuttle van down the pass (drool and snoring included). I kicked myself for missing all the amazing sights, but I certainly needed the nap! Hot dogs with Albert's salsa and hatch chilies made the dogs incredibly appetizing! So did cutting up the hot dogs and serving them in instant mashed potatoes and shredded cheese; that's how Elise and I like it! After dogs and s'mores, we hit the beach at Apgar Village where the water of Lake MacDonald was freezing! But we enjoyed Huckleberry ice cream and BEER!!!

The twins rented a Styrofoam stand-up paddle board and gave rides for a couple hours. The kids and I went out together as well. The paddling, calm water, and view made the evening perfect.

Back at camp, the kids helped Christopher with the fire while wine was consumed by the rest of us until the kids fell asleep, Chuck Roast on my lap and Pumpkin on Christopher's, and then the adults slowly put themselves to bed on at a time.
