A breakfast of eggs, bacon, and hash browns on tortillas is
absolutely perfect when camping. We were out of salsa but the breakfast was
filling and we were all happy. Quesadillas and ham/cheese sandwiches were made
and fritos packed for a hike to a Grinell Glacier. Christopher rode with us as
our two vehicles caravan-ed across Logan Pass to the east side of the park and
north to Many Glacier. Now, I'm not saying it's the safest thing I've ever
done, but Christopher apparently doesn't appreciate when I take pictures out of
my window while driving, so we pulled over at an overlook and switched places
so I could take all the pictures I wanted and he could drive.
Pumpkin fell
asleep after we got over the pass. Once
we found street parking and were getting our packs on, Chuck Roast complained
about the hike and when Pumpkin woke up, she said she didn't feel well and her
stomach hurt. From all the cheese (3 bites) in her quesadilla according to her.
We found the Swiftcurrent Nature Trail and sat down for lunch before hiking.
Both kids ate, but Pumpkin was definitely feeling off. She decided to try to
hike and see how it went. Chuck Roast was definitely not at his finest but
after crossing a river and finding a lake view, Pumpkin asked to go back to
camp.
The kids and I turned around while the rest of the family continued on.
The kids and I made it back over Logan Pass, stopping at the Weeping Wall to
get out and get a little wet.
Chuck Roast was sound asleep so I took a short
snooze in my camping chair while Pumpkin played with my hair and worked on
Wooly Willy, the cardboard face with metal shavings covered with plastic and a
magnet stick to decorate his face with metal that Christopher brought for the
kids. Once I woke up, we played Go Fish, Uno, and Dominos while Chuck Roast
continued to nap. It sprinkled for a short bit, so we moved our game into the
tent, but once the sprinkling stopped, we moved back to the fire pit. About
7:30, I made Pumpkin some plain noodles, her choice, and started to wonder
about the group, who said they'd be gone a few hours but that was 6ish hours
before. I knew the travel from the east to the west side of the park took quite
some time, but I started to formulate a plan for if they didn't show up by
nightfall. I was kind of hoping they had stopped for dinner and would bring me
something yummy to eat.
They showed up after 8pm and relayed their story. They
found the glacier and then headed back... on the wrong trail, which took them
to the lodge and they had to walk back to the car. It was a long, long walk for
them, but from the car back, they saw 3 Grizzlies!
Once we were all gathered
together again, we drove over to Apgar Village and ate dinner at Eddie's. Before
our food arrived, Chuck Roast notified the table that he had to go to the
bathroom. I took the time to finish what I was doing but heard a thump and
jumped up to find Chuck Roast on his side on the ground. He looked up at me and
said 'It's okay, I didn't break any bones.' All the neighboring tables laughed
along with our group as we walked to the bathroom. Dinner was fine; my
cranberry spinach salad was a delightful array greens that my body desperately
needed, Elise's fried chicken was good but the mashed potatoes left some room
for improvement, and the burgers didn't seem real fresh and I tend to be
disappointed by burgers that don't come with a cooked-to-your-liking option.
The deserts; Huckleberry crumble left a lot to be desired with the lack of
crumble and the syrupy filling, but the Huckleberry ice cream that was served
on top of the brownie sundae was phenomenal!
